‘Forest School at Kilmokea Gardens’
Kilmokea offers kids the rare opportunity to experience ‘Forest School’ in a friendly and secure environment. Forest school is an inspiring approach to outdoor fun stuff. This involves fun, discovery, team work, games, and learning new skills in the great outdoors. Children have the chance to build dens, learn how to light fires, try bushcraft, and do arts and crafts using nature’s resources. Discovering the wonders and challenges of Forest School is the reason it is so popular around the globe. The child-led, positive outdoor experience is a growing phenomenum in Ireland, and Kilmokea offers the perfect surroundings of woods, space, water, and huge array of plants for a wonderful and memorable experience. Forest school is suitable for the infant and 1st to 6th class years.

The tours are led by a member of the Kilmokea Staff to the relevant parts of the Gardens. All tours include a nature hunt relevant to the age group of the class visiting.
For 3rd to 6th Class and Junior Certificate students: We guide them throughout the gardens. We have created a scavenger hunt for them to partake in as we lead them down to introduce them to our Viking settlement, which has been created to honour them, as they landed at Kilmokea in the 830s and our Norman Motte which honours the arrival of the Normans in 1169.
For the infant and 1st to 3rd class years: We guide them throughout the gardens. We have created a Treasure hunt for them to partake in as we lead them down to ‘The Myrtle Wood’ . This story is read in a story time situation in a circle in the wood land Garden. The characters of the book, Marley Hedgehog, Sam Squirrel, Ernie Owl and Oscar Rabbit all come to life in this animated story telling sinario.
All students are invited to Our Fairy Village within a Fairy Fort in the Woodland which has been carefully created to spark the imagination of the young and older visitors!
We provide undercover lunch tables and free tea/coffee for teachers. We are delighted to cater to your schools specific needs and you can mix and match the activities to your special requirements.
For Primary students, there is an option of a hands-on session in the Education Room where a Kilmokea member of staff provides an opportunity to paint wooden houses to hang in your garden to attract wild birds. This extra option costs €8.00 per child.
